Workshop 1:
Sun Salutations

In this workshop we break down each element of a traditional Sun Salutation or Surya Namaskara. The sequence consists of a number of poses practiced in succession and linked to the breath.

Starting with the “poster pose” for yoga, we’ll help you build the Downward Facing Dog from the ground up (literally), showing you how and where to place your hands and feet, whether your knees should be bent or straight, whether your heels should touch the mat or not, how you move from here to another pose and of course how you can modify the pose to suit your body.

The Plank Pose builds strength and heat in your core, but can be taxing on your shoulders if your joints are not “stacked”. We’ll show you where to draw your power from in plank pose!

In every yoga class you’ve attended, you’ve come fact to face with Chaturanga (because yoga teachers all use this word and not really “low plank” pose, right?). When you’ve done a couple of these you will know how your shoulders and wrists feel! We’ll show you how you can modify this pose safely to gain all the benefits from the pose while applying the right principles of what it was designed for.

And when we finally find the floor from Chaturanga, there are two poses that follow – Cobra Pose or Upward Facing Dog. We’ll take you through the differences in these two poses, how to arrange your body parts to feel the intended sensation and give you options to enter and exit the poses in a Vinyasa flow.
